Mario Asked:

I am 15 a sophomore in High School. Goalkeeper tryouts for our school are in early September. I have been playing soccer since last December. Could you please give me some daily exercises/drills I could do everyday. I also want to jump higher.

Dear Mario,

Thank you for submitting your question with Ask the Goalkeeper. Since you have recently just started playing in the goalkeeper position, I would strongly suggest you try to find a goalkeeper trainer in your area or trying to find a soccer camp that you can attend. Having a goalkeeper trainer or going to a camp is going to really help you with the technical aspect of the position, such as catching the ball properly and diving properly. If there is a university in your area, try calling their assistant coach to see if they are having a summer camp or if you can do individual sessions with one of their goalkeepers. Usually they will be able to point you in the right direction.

If that isn’t a route that you would like to take I suggest that you find someone that is willing to go out and be a server for you. Take a look at our drills page and pick a few drills to do each day. Practice is the only thing that is going to help you improve. I will be posting videos soon, so continue to check back.

As for jumping higher, it is going to be difficult to see a big increase in your vertical jump in just a short amount of time. Working a lot on plyometrics and weight training is going to help improve it (FAQ- Weight Training for Goalkeepers), but not so much in the short term.

I hope that you have found this information helpful. If you would like for me further explain anything please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thank you,
Chase Harrison
